GRE – ELANS Research Project – Truck on new rails development project
Investment incl. rolling stock for 200 km ca. EUR 5 billion
Increase economic efficiency and capacity of freight transport, for traffic avoidance on motorways and improve the ecological balance
The novel concept envisages the building of completely new, yet to be developed freight rail lines alongside heavily loaded freight traffic highway routes (route bundling). These are intended solely for the transport of trucks (primarily accompanied transport). These new railway lines would be independent of the existing Deutsche Bahn network and through the use of the latest technologies and automation, an optimal high frequency of trains at holding times would be achieved for loading and unloading of approximately 10 minutes.
As part of a wide-ranging research project GRE is entrusted with the conceptual development of new loading stations as well as with all route planning issues.
